Spy on History: Victor Dowd and the World War II Ghost Army
by Enigma Alberti
January 23, 2018
Source: from pub

VICTOR DOWD AND THE WORLD WAR II GHOST ARMY follows Victor and the rest of the Ghost Army in their attempt to take back France from the Nazis as part of a top-secret military unit trained to draw attention from the real deployments. Victor and his fellow soldiers in the unit haven't been trained for combat but have specialized skills that allow them to create fake radio transmissions, dig trenches, and simulate the sights and sounds of real troops. Handpicked for their artistic and creative skills, the Ghost Army used everything from inflatable guns (to draw fire from the German artillery) and inflatable tanks (covered with slightly damaged camouflage netting so they were partially visible) to building fires and hanging up laundry (to make it look like troops were camped nearby) in their war of deception.
SPY ON HISTORY also includes an enriching interactive element: spy craft materials that make readers part of the story as honorary spies. Readers collect clues embedded in the illustrations and text to uncover the mystery of Victor Dowd’s missing sketchbook, using:
·         A red acetate sheet
·         A cipher wheel
·         A WWII “poop sheet,” collecting information about specific units
·         A vellum featuring the insignia patches of the Ghost Army and the battalions they impersonated

About the Victor Dowd and the World War II Ghost Army team:
Enigma Alberti is the nom de plume of a group of successful children's book authors whose first book was SPY ON HISTORY Mary Bowser and the Civil War Spy Ring.

Scott Wegener is a self-taught artist perhaps best known for being co-creator and artist of Atomic Robo.

Exciting, entertaining, and educational...this unique and clever book is all these things! Middle-grade readers will be captivated by the fascinating history of the Ghost Army and will have a blast deciphering puzzles and clues using the tools provided within the book.
