Baby Chomper's Bath Time Awareness Tour (interview & giveaway)

The Baby Chomper's Bath Time Awareness Tour is stopping by today! This tour is hosted by The Children's Book Review and sponsored by Jeff Minich...

by Jeff Minich

Baby Chomper’s Bath Time is a lovable tale about a little puppy who learns to have fun doing his least favorite thing--- taking a bath! One day, baby Chomper escapes from home and gets muddy and stinky beyond belief. He rolls in the mud, takes a dive in the trash, and even gets sprayed by a very stinky skunk. After returning home, he finds that it’s his least favorite time of all: BATH TIME! With nowhere else to go, Chomper realizes that bath time can be one of the most fun times of all! He imagines himself diving into the deep blue sea, being the captain of his own ship, and surfing to a faraway shore. Baby Chomper’s Bath Time is a playful story that encourages children to see the bright side of every situation.

Q1. What three words best describe your book Baby Chomper’s Bath Time?

Buoyant, Bubbly, & Cute!

Q2. Grab a copy of Baby Chomper’s Bath Time and answer the following:

Favorite page?

On Page 11 of the story, when Chomper fully realizes that it’s bath time, his expression is just priceless. This page makes me laugh out loud every time I read the book.

Favorite illustration?

I love the three action spreads in the middle of the book. In each one, Chomper’s imagination is sparked by a bath toy— a mask & snorkel, a boat, and a surfboard and then each scene seamlessly blends from playing with a toy to Chomper in life-size action-- like surfing his way into shore. These spreads highlight some of illustrator Renan Garcia’s genius. Initially the scenes were written as separate pages and he came up with the idea to build these beautiful spreads.  Of those spreads, I really love the one with Chomper surfing. Renan gave Chomper a child-like physicality (and has him hanging-ten instead of on all fours!) that perfectly mixes fantasy with reality.

Favorite setting?

My favorite setting is near the end of the book where Chomper is facing the mirror as he gets freshened up after his bath. We see him getting his hair combed, his teeth brushed, and a nice little dousing in baby powder. Baby Chomper is just so cute!

Q3.  Baby Chomper isn’t a fan of baths until he discovers they can be a lot of fun...what’s something that you didn’t like at first but discovered wasn’t so bad after all?

I’m terrified of heights! A few years ago a friend asked if I wanted to go paragliding, which I somehow confused with parasailing (safely over water!). When we got to the spot to launch and I realized I would be tandem jumping off a cliff over land, let’s just say I was less than thrilled! I decided to go through with it anyway, and surprisingly once we left the ground I had no fear and found the glide down to be quite pleasant.

Q4. What do you hope little readers learn and/or walk away after enjoying Baby Chomper’s Bath Time?

First and foremost, I really want kids to have fun with the story. But I also hope it serves as a lesson in “buoyancy” for them. There was a great article in the New York Times recently about turning negative thinkers into positive ones. One of the takeaways was that people who practice gratitude and resilient thinking can become healthier and more social. That’s certainly something we should all want for our kids. I hope this book will serve as a subtle reference point for parents when their kids are struggling with negative emotions—to remind them that they have the power to take situations they don’t like and turn them into positive experiences.

Q5. If you were to create and bake a cupcake inspired by Baby Chomper’s Bath Time, what would it look and taste like, and what would you call it?

Oh wow, I love cupcakes. I’m seeing a really cool aqua blue cupcake with white vanilla frosting shaped into a wave.  There would also be a candy surfboard on top of that wave. I would call it Baby Chomper’s Rip Curl!
