6th MMGM: The Wizard's Dog by Eric Kahn Gale (interview, giveaway)

Welcome to Day 18 of the 6th Annual March MG Madness, featuring Eric Kahn Gale and his book, The Wizard's Dog!

Meet Nosewise. He’s spunky. He’s curious. And he’s a dog who can’t understand why his pack mates Merlin and Morgana spend all day practicing magic tricks. If it’s a trick they want, he’s the dog to ask! He can already Sit!, Stay!, and Roll Over!

But there’s no way Nosewise is Stay!ing when his master and best friend, Merlin, is kidnapped. There’s nothing Nosewise won’t do to get Merlin back, even if it means facing the strange Fae people and their magic-eating worms, or tangling with the mysterious Sword in the Stone. But it may take more than sniffing out a spell to do it!

Nosewise’s hilarious escapades and steadfast loyalty get him and his companions through King Arthur’s Dark Ages.

Q1. What three words best describe your book, The Wizard’s Dog?

Funny, Lovable and Loud. Just like my dog!
Q2. Grab a copy of The Wizard’s Dog and answer the following:
Favorite chapter?
Chapter One: Stupid Door

This is definitely the chapter I rewrote the most and it has some of my favorite jokes.
Favorite page?
Pg 221. But I can’t take credit for it. The page is great because of Dave Philips’ amazing artwork. Giant monsters are chasing Nosewise (our doggy hero).

Favorite setting?
The Otherworld. The strange land of the Fae people where Nosewise finds himself midway through the book.
Flip to a random page and give us a 1-2 sentences teaser:
Ok, I’m on pg. 190. Whoa, it looks like Nosewise and Arthur has been shipwrecked and a mysterious woman has come upon them. It’s the Lady of the Lake.
Q3. Who are your favorite middle-grade hero and heroine? What is your favorite middle-grade book?
Hermione Granger is my favorite character of all time. I was both in love with her and wanted to be her best friend. My favorite hero is Ender from Ender’s game, though that’s arguable whether it’s middle grade or not.
Favorite book is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Q4. Why do you think middle-grade lit is so important?
Middle-grade books are often the first stories children read on their own. They’re the spring board for fantasies not guided by parents and teachers.
Q5. If you were to create and bake a cupcake inspired by The Wizard’s Dog, what would it look and taste like, and what would you call it?
Well, it would absolutely be fluffy and sweet. So a meringue flavored frosting would be best. But it should have a solid substantial chocolate heart. I’d call it The Wizard’s Doggy Treat.

Eric lives in Chicago, IL with his wife and his dog, Bowser--the inspiration for Nosewise in The Wizard's Dog.
"All of my books have been inspired by my life. My first novel, The Bully Book, is a a comic mystery taken directly from my experiences being bullied in 6th grade. My second, The Zoo at the Edge of the World, is a fantasy prompted by my lifelong obsession with animals. And my newest book, The Wizard's Dog, is what I imagine my lovely dog, Bowser, would be like if he was granted magic powers. Life has enriched my books, and these books have vastly enriched my life."

A book with a funny, lovable, and loud dog is sure to be a hit with middle grade readers!
