6th MMGM: Dragon's Future by Kandi Wyatt (interview, giveaway)

Welcome to Day 16 of the 6th Annual March MG Madness, featuring Kandi Wyatt and her book, Dragon's Future!

Dragon’s Future
(Dragon Courage #1)
by Kandi Wyatt
August 10, 2015
Every child of Woolpren dreams of becoming one, but only a few are chosen. Now, ten-year-old twin brother and sister, Ruskya and Duskya, have been selected to join an elite group of riders: dragon riders. Full of awe and excitement, the twins leave their mother, and their home, to train for their new lives.

Fifteen years later, dragons are becoming extinct and riders are rare. One day, Ruskya is at the general store in town when a man announces that he is recruiting new dragon riders. Ruskya goes undercover, and discovers that there is another colony of riders with their own agenda—a quest to find a mysterious plant that could restore the dragon population, or destroy it. When a battle erupts between the two colonies, it’s up to Ruskya and his friends to fight for their dragons’ future, and their lives.

Follow Ruskya’s quest as he finds courage and friendship in this exciting middle grade fantasy series by new author Kandi J Wyatt.

Reviews:

Q1. What three words best describe your book, Dragon’s Future?
Friendship, Family, and Adventure

Q2. Grab a copy of Dragon’s Future and answer the following:
Favorite chapter? Chapter 27: A New Leader

Favorite page? Page 232

Favorite setting? The hatchling cave

Flip to a random page and give us a 1-2 sentences teaser:
“Fine?” Glendyn replied. “I have seen two miracles today. The first was Wyn and the second, smaller one is you, Ruskya.” He paused. “I take that back, it was three miracles. You, Ruskya, are the third.”

Q3. Who are your favorite middle-grade hero and heroine? What is your favorite middle-grade book?
The Blind King from Beyonders and Meggie from Inkspell. The Blind King inspires courage in Jason. He’s the epitome of a kind ruler. Meggie is so alive, independent, and fun to be around. My favorite middle-grade book has to be The Dragonrider by Cornelia Funke. I love how the characters interact. I can’t choose a favorite character—even the antagonist is amazing.

Q4. Why do you think middle-grade lit is so important?
Middle-grade literature has a unique opportunity to help mold kids by the stories they read. The characters can teach through what they do and say. Kids in this age bracket are in the quiet stage. They’re not rebelling like their older peers. Instead, they’re sitting back and developing who they are. If we can reach them at that age without conflict, we can make the teen years much, much easier to deal with. Believe me. I’ve seen it happen. Not all kids will be easy through the teen years, but if a relationship can be built during the middle-grade years, parents stand a chance with their teen. So, if parents are reading with their kids at this stage or even have input in their reading, they can use books to build that relationship.

Q5. If you were to create and bake a cupcake inspired by Dragon’s Future, what would it look and taste like, and what would you call it?
A cupcake, huh? That’s a bit harder. Well, it would be chocolate first off, because I love chocolate. It would have tan frosting—maybe peanut butter because peanut butter goes so well with chocolate—to match the canyons. Then there’d be a candied dragon on top. Each cupcake would have a different blue-hued dragon on top. The cupcakes would be called True Flight Cupcakes.

Even as a young girl, Kandi J Wyatt, had a knack for words. She loved to read them, even if it was on a shampoo bottle! By high school Kandi had learned to put words together on paper to create stories for those she loved. Nowadays, she writes for her kids, whether that's her own five or the hundreds of students she's been lucky to teach. When Kandi's not spinning words to create stories, she's using them to teach students about Spanish, life, and leadership.

I love books about dragons and have been reading more and more. This is the first middle grade series that I've found. These books sound exciting to read and I love the covers.

Danielle, Glad you were able to find them. Hope you enjoy. They were written with my kids in mind who at the time were between 9 and 13.
