I'm so thrilled to be starting off this year's March MG Madness with one of my favorite middle-grade authors, Robert Gray! Robert's Nightmare Series is such spooktacular fun and all kinds of awesome. I got the chance to sit down with one of my fave characters from this series for an interview, plus there's a fab giveaway...

Even her family is a bunch of horrible monsters. However, in the monster-inhabited world of Gravesville—a world where messages are sent through Ouija boards, jack-o’-lanterns get facials to suit their moods, and the worst thing Eve has to deal with are those annoying zombie tourists who overrun her favorite graveyard during the Halloween season—horrible means wonderful. And everything for Eve is perfectly horrible. But her life is about to go head over heels when a mysterious group known as The Source starts terrorizing Gravesville. Now she must move to the human world—where everything is opposite ... and for Eve, that's absolutely adorable!

Robert Gray is a writer. If that job description doesn’t impress you, how about fantasy writer? Too general? Well, he doesn’t get insulted if you call him a horror writer. If horror’s not your thing, then scratch out horror and replace it with suspense. And for the kiddies, you can slap on a YA or MG in front of that title. Gray lives in Bushkill, Pennsylvania with his wife and two children.

Hello, Steve, and welcome to Word Spelunking! Thanks so much for stopping by and chatting with us today.

So, as a human friend to someone who was raised by monsters, in a world filled with monsters, can you tell us what it’s like to know and love Eve Hallows?
Oh, Eve is totally cool.  Ever since she moved here, my life has been all sorts of exciting—battling evil mutations and saving worlds and all that stuff.  And she has a monster family, too.  Seriously?  That's just awesome with a side of epic.

What’s one special thing you’ve come to learn about Eve, that readers may be surprised to learn about this horribly awesome girl?
She'll probably get embarrassed that I'm mentioning this, because she thinks she's all kick-butt and junk, but she cries at horror movies, like all the time. Whenever the monster dies at the end, it's waterworks city with her.  Everyone else is walking out of the movie theatre all pale and traumatized and she's got tears running down her face.  It's too funny.
Since meeting Eve and her family, you’ve experienced and come face to face with some crazy, scary, thrilling things! What has been some of the most memorable things you’ve experienced or encountered so far, as Eve’s friend?
Jasmine.  Jasmine.  Jasmine.

You recently took a trip to Eve’s homeworld, Gravesville. Can you tell us what that was like?!
Best trip ever! Gravesville is like Disney World … except maybe for the fact that some of the characters want to kill you.  And, yeah, don't even bother trying to get an autograph.  Monsters aren't in to that stuff. Who would've thought?  The rides in Gravesville are amazing, though, which more than makes up for the grumpy attitudes.
If YOU were able to turn into ANY monster and reside in Gravesville, what would you become? Why?
A werewolf, definitely.  They like to party hard and put off their responsibilities, which is pretty much how I roll, too.  Hmm, now that I think about it, I found this long hair on my chest the other day.  Maybe I am turning into a werewolf.  After everything I’ve seen over the last year, it wouldn’t surprise me.

As you may know, some kooky fellow named Robert Gray is sharing Eve’s (and your!) story with the world in his Nightmare Series! Can you tell readers, in ONE sentence, why they should give these books a try?
I would hold off on buying these books, at least until I start getting paid for all this world saving we’re doing.  Seriously, we do all the work, and the guy sitting in his comfy chair gets all the cash.  So not fair.
Ok, one last question: You stop by Eve’s family’s restaurant, Ghoulicious Pizza- what delectable pizza concoction do you order?!
Pssh.  I'll eat anything there.  It's all delicious.   And since I work there, I eat for free.  Bonus!

Thank you SO MUCH Steve (and Robert!) for stopping by and chatting with me today! If you haven't had the chance to read this series yet, GET ON THAT! I can't recommend these fantastic, fun books enough!

I love everything about Gravesville, so I just had to ask Robert what the top ten horrible (awesome!) things to do or see in Gravesville are....

Top Ten Horrible Things To Do or See in Gravesville

I'm not much of an expert on Gravesville, so I asked Eve to share some of her favorite things to do and see there.  Here's her list:

1)   I don't care if you're six or six feet under, you can't come to Gravesville and not spend some time at the graveyard.  It's like the biggest and most horrible place in any world.  Period.

2)   One of my personal favorite things to do at the graveyard is fog surf.  What you do is grab a possessed board, wait for a thick layer of fog to creep in, and then ride it out.  It’s so much fun.

3)   After your romp through the graveyard, you’ll probably be hungrier than a vamp at a blood bank, and nothing cures hunger pains like Treats n' Treats.  It's an all-you-can-eat candy buffet.  Do I really have to say more?

4)   A tour of Gravesville would not be complete without a visit to the shopping village.  There's a whole mess of restaurants and stores like Bobbing Bones and Hottentots.  The place definitely has something for everyone.

5)   While in the shopping village, be sure to stop by Books & Brimstone, too.  With its dusty shelves, charming proprietor, comfy couches, and the creamiest hot pumpkin you'll ever have, it’s a mandatory stop for the avid reader.

6)   When you get tired of walking, take a carriage ride.  It’s the easiest way to travel in Gravesville.  Hold on, though.  Those skeletal horses can move fast.

7)   For lunch, head over to the Ogopogo Grill.  Make sure you order a frosty mug of pumpkin soda.  It's to die for!  Then just relax and watch the lake monster chase away annoying zombie tourists.

8)   If you're more of the boating type, then I'd highly recommend a visit to Port Carta Marina.  Avoid the zombie pirates, though. They smell funky and have a bit of a brain fetish.

9)   For the adventurer type, take a riverboat trip through the swamps.  You might even get lucky and spot some rare creatures.

10)  Once the full moon comes out, head over to the Howling Woods, where the real party animals live.  Yup, the werewolves here are all about having fun.  Oh, and be sure to ask for my best friends Sally, Pia, and Stephinica.  Tell them I sent you.  They'll take horrible care of you.

Eve and her family are no longer safe in the human world, and as they race to escape this new threat, Eve stumbles into a trap, which forces her back to Gravesville along with her family and friends. *I received an eARC of this title in exchange for my honest review*

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of The Nightmare Series, and am always SO thrilled when a new one comes out, so I’m happy to report that author Robert Gray has done it again! He’s added a spooktacularly fun and thrilling new volume to his already awesome series. Eve Hallows and the Book of Shivers, book three in this series, joins books one and two as some of my favorite middle-grade reads!

In book three, we find the horrible (which really means awesome) Eve Hallows in some unbelievably adorable (which means awful) situations. On the run from The Source, with her three best human friends, reluctant heroine Eve must locate the Book of Shivers to save both her beloved Gravesville and the human world that's growing on her. Along the way she ends up in some pretty unexpected places and discovers some info that rocks both her worlds!

The Nightmare Series continues to have EVERYTHING I love in my middle-grade reads: fantastic world-building, unforgettable characters, stellar storytelling, and an imaginative story. Like books one and two, Eve Hallows and the Book of Shivers is a captivating and entertaining mix of laugh-out-loud humor, a whimsical macabre atmosphere, creepy fun, and clever writing. Gray expands both his Gravesville and the human world, introduces some kooky cool new characters, and takes Eve and readers on a wild ride (literally!).

I love the whimsically dark atmosphere of these books! Gray creates a setting and tone that are deliciously eerie and unexpected, with enough thrills and chills to keep readers in spine-tingling shivers, but always appropriate for its intended audience. Eve Hallows and the Book of Shivers is bursting with monster-y goodness of the classic kind (vampires, mummies, witches, and ghosts, oh my!) and the imaginative and weird kind (werebies, zompires, barf twins). We get to explore more of Gravesville in all its horrible, swampy glory (sign me up for a timeshare!) and we end up in the only place in the human world that is just as weird, strange, and outrageous as Gravesville: Hollywood!

All my fave characters from books one and two are back in Eve Hallows and the Book of Shivers, while we meet some new creeptastic friends. Eve Hallows, with her pitch-perfect teen sarcasm; unique perspective; and all around horribly awesome personality, continues to be so lovable and relatable! I love being inside her head and seeing the story unfold through her eyes and wry, honest observations. Eve’s three human BFF’s, Steve; Lucy; and Carly Beth really shine in this book and this quirky foursome friendship is one of the most genuine and fun ones in middle-grade.

A Frankentrain, with lightning and all, takes Eve and her friends on an unforgettable and crazy trip in search of the mysterious Sedrick Creach. Eve ends up discovering things about her past that will have readers exclaiming “Oh. My. Jack!”. And that ending?! Let’s just say I’m DYING for the next book!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: Simply put, I LoveAdoreAmCrazyAbout this series! Robert Gray continues to craft wildly imaginative, wickedly fun, and highly entertaining books, and Eve Hallows and the Book of Shivers is no exception. A must read book in a must read series for both young and older readers!
