Mera: Tidebreaker Blog Tour (review, interview, giveaway)

MeraTidebreaker
By Danielle Paige
Illustrated by Stephen Byrne
April 2, 2019
DC Ink

From Danielle Paige, the New York Times best-selling author of Stealing Snow, comes a Mera and Aquaman origin story that explores Mera's first steps on land as well as her first steps as a hero or a villain, forcing her to choose to follow her heart or her mission to kill.

Mera is teenage royalty, heir to the throne of Xebel, the other not-so-lost colony under the sea. But Mera is destined to wear a different crown, that of Atlantis. When the inhabitants of Xebel plot to overthrow their homeland of Atlantis, Mera is sent to kill the heir to the throne, Arthur Curry. As the unrest between their colonies grows, Mera and Arthur unexpectedly fall in love...will Arthur Curry be the king at Mera's side in Atlantis, or will he die under her blade?

Mera by Danielle Paige is an astonishing story that explores themes of duty, love, heroism and freedom, all through the eyes of readers' favorite undersea royalty.

Mera, princess of the underwater kingdom Xebel, loathes the people from Atlantis. In a bid to overthrow their Atlantean rulers, Mera sets out for dry land for the first time to complete one mission: kill Arthur Curry, heir to the Atlantis throne. But Arthur isn’t anything like Mera imagined him to be and the two fall in love. But when Mera’s people and Arthur’s people come looking for war, will the two teens choose family loyalty or love?

In Danielle Paige’s MeraTidebreaker readers will dive headfirst into a fast-paced, hip Mera and Aquaman origin story. As a graphic novel, the story moves swiftly, keeping readers fully engaged with all its refreshing action, thrills, humor, and romance. The kingdoms of Xebel and Atlantis make for exciting and captivating settings, while Arthur’s home on land feels comfortingly familiar. Paige fills both Mera and Arthur with enough relatable teen angst, admirable courage, and complexity to make them feel nicely developed and interesting. Plus, readers will root for their opposing-sides-love-story. And Byrne’s lively, action-packed illustrations, with their lush blues and oranges color scheme, perfectly capture the story.

Full of action, romance, authentic teen angst, and great illustrations, readers won’t come up for air until the very last page. Perfect for fans of Mera and Aquaman or those just discovering them.

Q1. What three words best describe MeraTidebreaker?
Fun. Romantic. Ass-kicking.

Q2. Grab a copy of MeraTidebreaker and answer the following:
Favorite page? Hero pose!!!

Favorite illustration? The upside down almost-kiss underwater (169)

Favorite setting? Xebel. I think Stephen Byrne, my brilliant artist, did such an incredible job bringing it to life.

Flip to a random page and give us a 1-2 sentences teaser:  Mera and Arthur are literally on a cliff. Will she kiss him or kill him or both….(138)

Q3. Tell us a bit about your character Mera? What makes her unique and special, and what do you love about her?
Mera’s smart and fiercely loyal and brave. I love how incredibly certain she is about herself and her place in the world (or in the water) and also how throughout the course of the story she is capable of one of the most heroic things of all – change.

Q4. Fill in the blanks:
I’m really awesome at Drawing

I’m really embarrassed to admit That I have never read Salinger.

The last great book I read was The Everlasting Rose, Belles Book 2, Dhonielle Clayton

Q5. If you were to create and bake a cupcake inspired by MeraTidebreaker, what would it look and taste like, and what would you call it?
Could I call it Tidebreaker? It definitely is blue on the inside and outside and it tastes like a non alcoholic Mai Tai. And I would top it with Mera’s crown!
