HEARTWOOD HOTEL, A TRUE HOME
(Book 1)
by Kallie George, illustrated by Stephanie Graegin
July 3, 2017
176 pages
Disney-Hyperion
Hardcover, paperback, eBook
When Mona the Mouse stumbles across the wondrous world of the Heartwood Hotel in the middle of a storm, she desperately hopes they'll let her stay. As it turns out, Mona is precisely the maid they need at the grandest hotel in Fernwood Forest, where animals come from far and wide for safety, luxury, and comfort. But the Heartwood Hotel is not all acorn souffl and soft moss-lined beds. Danger lurks, and as it approaches, Mona finds that this hotel is more than a warm place to spend the night. It might also be a home.
This delightfully enticing start of a new chapter book series tells a tale of friendship, courage, and community, with exquisite black-and-white illustrations throughout..

Top Five Tips for Writing
I love writing, especially children’s books, like Heartwood Hotel. Here are some writing tips that I’ve used over the years. These are tips that work for me—but if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that writing is a really personal, individual process, and the most important thing is to find your own way and tips that make your voice and story shine.
1. Love your idea
Choose a topic, a genre, a character that you really want to write about. If you don’t love your idea, if you’re not connected to it, then your writing won’t shine. Don’t get caught up in trying to write something because you think it might get published or sell. Write something because you want to write it, because you HAVE to write it. That will bring the greatest satisfaction—and the best story. And when you have a strong story, publishing will often follow.
2. Plot out an idea
I like to plot. Some of my friends who are writers are not plotters—and that works for them. But I need to have a plan so that I can abandon the plan (makes sense, right?). There are a few good outcomes from outlining a story including you can more effectively use foreshadowing since you know the ending; you can identify the character’s arc; and you can make sure your pacing flows. I like having a road map, my plot, and I often take months coming up with one and tweaking it—sometimes as long as the writing process itself. I often share these plots with my friends and editors as well, to garner their feedback.
3. Share your stories
Find a friend (or two or three) who you can share your stories with and receive feedback. I have a fantastic writing group, as well as a dear editor friend who reviews all my work before I even send it to my agent. Plus a few other friends who are amazing writers who I share my stories with, too! That’s a lot of editors—and that’s BEFORE I show my stories to my official editor at the publishing house! Each of these friends gives me valuable advice and helps strengthen my stories. It’s often impossible to see the weaknesses in your own work—you’re too close to it.
But be careful when choosing a good critique partner. Sometimes friends are too nice and only say good things—to me, I’d rather have honest hard feedback. I want my story to be the best it can be, and the only way to get there is to edit it. I know my first drafts aren’t the best, after all. Which brings me to…
4. Write rough, then edit
It’s okay if your first drafts aren’t very good. If they are scrawled out in a notebook, or riddled with spelling mistakes. At least, that’s the way mine are. Sometimes I just need to get that draft down on paper, I need to capture the voice and get the flow of it. You can always edit it later. And do edit it. Once you have a structure and story you are pleased with, polish it as much as it takes to make every line sing.
5. Read a lot
Reading truly is one of the best ways to become a stronger writer. Read anything and everything. I have a great variation of books I read—from picture books to chick lit. I definitely try to keep my eye out for good new chapter books too, since I write in that genre. I find, however, that reading other early chapter books tends to be less escapism for me and more work, since I usually read not only to enjoy the story, but to examine how the author did what she or he did. What writing techniques did she or he use? How did she or she so effectively create the story? This critical eye helps me apply the same critical eye on my work.
I wish you the best in your own writing journey and hope some of these tips are helpful for you. Writing is one of the most wonderful ways to spend your time and use your imagination… have fun!

Happy writing!
Kallie

Undertow Blog Tour {review and giveaway}

I'm thrilled to have the Undertow Blog Tour stopping by today...

Undertow
(Undertow #1)
by Michael Buckley
5/5/15
HMH Books for Young Readers
384 pages
Sixteen-year-old Lyric Walker’s life is forever changed when she witnesses the arrival of 30,000 Alpha, a five-nation race of ocean-dwelling warriors, on her beach in Coney Island. The world’s initial wonder and awe over the Alpha quickly turns ugly and paranoid and violent, and Lyric’s small town transforms into a military zone with humans on one side and Alpha on the other. When Lyric is recruited to help the crown prince, a boy named Fathom, assimilate, she begins to fall for him. But their love is a dangerous one, and there are forces on both sides working to keep them apart. Only, what if the Alpha are not actually the enemy? What if they are in fact humanity’s only hope of survival? Because the real enemy is coming. And it’s more terrifying than anything the world has ever seen.

Action, suspense, and romance whirlpool dangerously in this cinematic saga, a blend of District 9 and The Outsiders.

Praise for Undertow

"Readers will find themselves immersed in this semi-edgy, race-against-the-clock world that's waiting to implode."—Kirkus

"Buckley packs this propulsive novel with one walloping scene after another, and there's enough action, romance, and high-stakes drama to keep a wide array of readers interested."—Booklist
"Buckley draws clear parallels between the vicious anti-Alpha attitudes and existing racial and ethnic prejudices...A fascinating, engaging, and tense tale, and a strong start to the series."—Publishers Weekly

“A gritty, turbulent novel as sweeping and deep as the ocean itself. UNDERTOW will pull you in and hold you down.”—Rebecca Serle, author of When You Were Mine, and The Edge of Falling

“Lyric is a girl’s girl—as savvy as she is soulful, as sharp as she is tender. Lyric’s fierce, distinctive voice is the core magnetic force of UNDERTOW, and why we will all be stampeding for more.—Adele Griffin, author of All You Never Wanted and The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone

Until the Alpha came, all teenage Lyric Walker had to worry about were her migraines, keeping up with her BFF, Bex, and whether or not super hot Gabriel would stick around. But then 30,000 Alphas came out of the ocean and divided Lyric’s city into a war zone. The five-nation Alphas live in a massive tent-city on the beach, but many of the humans in Lyric’s world want them gone or worse. When several Alpha young are chosen to attend the local high school, Lyric is assigned to the Alpha Prince, Fathom. Reluctantly, Lyric and Fathom spend time together slowly building a friendship that quickly turns into more. But Lyric’s family is hiding a big secret and it turns out there may be something even more dangerous than the Alphas in the ocean.

Michael Buckley’s Undertow is a complex, multi-faceted, smartly written YA novel that is as enthralling as it is thought-provoking. On the surface Undertow seems to have an over-used and predictable premise- a hostile nonhuman species comes to Earth, spurring an epic love story between a human and nonhuman- and, while this may be a small part of Undertow’s premise, Buckley offers readers so much more. Yes, the smoldering tension between the humans and Alphas is intensely thrilling and the star-crossed love story between Lyric and Fathom is entertaining, but it’s the provocative, insightful exploration of human nature that kept me truly captivated and impressed. There are a lot of hot topics interwoven in Undertow- racism, poverty, abuse, drug use, sexuality, government control, etc- and Buckley does an exceptional job of exploring these topics realistically and in ways that never feels preachy or judgemental. There’s much in Undertow that will stimulate great discussion and leave readers very thoughtful.

Of course, the less serious side of Undertow (romance, action, humor, etc) kept me amused from beginning to end. Buckley fills Undertow with an eclectic cast of characters. I love that our heroine, Lyric, feels like a real, flawed teenager, and I enjoyed getting to know her. With his aloofness and hard exterior, Fathom is a bit harder to warm up to, but I appreciated his character growth throughout the book. While their romance moves a bit too fast for my liking, I genuinely liked Lyric and Fathom as a pair and I’m eager to see where their relationship goes in future books. I think my favorite character in Undertow is Lyric’s BFF, Bex, who has some of the best funny, snarky lines.

Undertow concludes with a helluva splash and definitely has me wanting more!

my final thoughts: Michael Buckley offers readers engaging characters, an exciting premise, and plenty of thought-provoking material. Undertow is a smart, refreshing, and wildly entertaining addition to the world of YA!

Polaris Blog Tour {Review and Giveaway}

I'm thrilled to have the Polaris Blog Tour stopping by today with my Review and a Giveaway...

POLARIS
(Avalon #2)
by Mindee Arnett
1/20/15
Balzer + Bray
432 pages
Jeth Seagrave and his crew of mercenaries are pulled into one last high-stakes mission in this breathtaking sequel to Mindee Arnett’s fascinating and fast-paced sci-fi thriller Avalon.

Jeth Seagrave and his crew are on the run. The ITA, still holding Jeth’s mother in a remote research lab, is now intent on acquiring the metatech secrets Jeth’s sister Cora carries inside her DNA, and Jeth is desperate to find the resources he needs to rescue his mother and start a new life outside the Confederation. But the ITA is just as desperate, and Jeth soon finds himself pursued by a mysterious figure hell-bent on capturing him and his crew—dead or alive.

With nowhere to run and only one play left, Jeth enters into a bargain with the last person he ever thought he’d see again: Daxton Price, the galaxy’s newest and most fearsome crime lord. Dax promises to help Jeth, but his help will only come at a price—a price that could mean sacrificing everything Jeth has fought for until now.

The conclusion to the story Mindee Arnett began in her acclaimed novelAvalonPolaris is a dangerous journey into the spaces between power and corruption, life and death, the parts of ourselves we leave behind, and the parts we struggle to hold on to.

Last year, Mindee Arnett took readers on a wildly fun, intergalactic sci-fi adventure with Avalon. Well, that fast-paced story continues in the equally enthralling, Polaris!

It’s been several months since the life changing events in Avalon and Jeth Seagrave, and his mercenary crew, are on the run from the ITA. Jeth’s long thought dead mother is still held captive and his new little sister, Cora, is hunted for her unique and priceless DNA. Jeth must make a dangerous deal with a dangerous man in order to save the ones he loves. But this deal comes with a heavy price, and disheartening betrayals and heart-breaking losses come at Jeth and his crew from all sides.

Like Avalon, Polaris is a fascinating and fun sci-fi adventure, full of thrills; twists; and likable characters. Arnett combines action, romance, humor, sci-fi elements, and a lot of heart, to create a captivating and exciting story. Polaris is given the wide expanse of space as its setting, making for an endlessly intriguing world. For the most part, this intergalactic world is vividly and lushly laid out with great world-building. And Arnett has filled this future space world with some seriously cool gadgets, places, and people. Space jumps, telepathy, metatech, mysterious alien life-forms...Polaris has all this and more!

Jeth and his crew find themselves on the run from the ITA and a wickedly dangerous man, and on a fragile, world-changing mission. The action, twists and turns, and revelations are plentiful and entertaining! But, I found Polaris to be quite an emotional journey for its characters as well. Arnett does an excellent job of exploring themes of love, family, power, greed, and self-discovery, making Polaris a very layered, complex story.

Throughout Avalon and Polaris, I’ve enjoyed getting to know this series’ characters very much. Jeth makes for a likable, relatable, and charming hero, who is surrounded by an eclectic crew. And I love how Arnett has allowed her “baddies” to be just as complex and intriguing as the good guys. However, there are a few characters in Polaris that I wish got more story-time, simply because I like them so much!

The conclusion of Polaris took me somewhere quite unexpected, but I think readers will really dig it!

My Final Thoughts: With exciting storytelling, intriguing world-building, and likable characters, Polaris is a fun, satisfying conclusion in an out of this world sci-fi series!

MY RATING
4/5 cupcakes

Mindee Arnett lives on a horse farm in Ohio with her husband, two kids, a couple of dogs, and an inappropriate number of cats. She’s addicted to jumping horses and telling tales of magic, the macabre, and outer space. She has far more dreams than nightmares.
