OPAL (Lux #3) Cover Reveal

I'm super excited to be a part of this epic cover reveal today and share the awesome cover of OPAL (Lux #3)...

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it.

Review: Onyx (Lux #2) by Jennifer Armentrout

TITLE: Onyx                                                   SERIES: Lux #2
AUTHOR: Jennifer Armentrout                PUB DATE: 8/14/12
PUB: Entangled Teen                                     FORMAT: eARC
SOURCE: from pub for review

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…
Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarre connection. I’ve sworn him off even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But against all common sense, I’m falling for him. Hard.
Our relationship issues aren’t out biggest problem…
The Department of Defense is here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And when a new boy shows up a school with a secret of his own, things get complicated fast. I need to choose between my own instincts and Daemon’s.
But then everything changes…
I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. Daemon’s never going to stop searching until gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?
No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies.

THREE WORDS: So. Many. Feels O_O >.< *_* ;_;

MY REVIEW: In Obsidian (Lux #1), author Jennifer Armentrout introduced readers to an explosive and addicting story full of romance, aliens and actions and in Onyx she continues to delve deeper into Katy’s alien filled world, with another round of edge-of-your seat storytelling.

The events in Obsidian left Katy connected to Daemon in more ways than one. Not sure if their feelings are real or just a consequence of this connection, Katy tries to keep some emotional distance between she and him, but Daemon doesn’t make this easy. He’s out to prove that what he feels for Katy is as real as it gets, and as strong-willed as she is, Katy definitely isn’t immune to his charm and presence. When a new, cute boy, with secrets of his own, shows up, Katy finds the distractions she needs. But the group has bigger problems than confusing lust/love to deal with, the DOD is in town and they’re suspicious. And things get even more complicated when Katy sees someone who shouldn’t be alive and she learns that maybe the DOD isn’t just interested in the Lux; maybe they’re interested in her. But why?

There are two things I’ve come to expect from Jennifer Armentrout’s YA books: 1) they WILL be made of awesome and win and 2) they will make feel ALL THE THINGS! And Onyx is no exception.

The electric, addicting and smart writing and storytelling of the first book is effortlessly carried over into Onyx. Armentrout’s superb and layered world-building continues to impress and enthrall me. In book two, the world of the Lux is deftly expanded and explored more in-depth, the action remains suspenseful, the romance gets steamier and we get to know our favorite characters even more.  At over 400 pages, this is a lengthy novel and there are times when the story moves rather slowly. The first quarter of the book meanders a bit, with a languid build-up, but once the story finds its flow and really picks ups, it paces nicely until the end and has a great balance of action, romance and mystery.

What I still love most about this series are the wonderful and engaging characters. My crush on Katy has surpassed the fangirl level! She continues to be one of the best developed and written YA heroines in existence. Her strength, determination, courage and strong-will never waver. I love that she isn’t defined by her love interest and can easily stand alone as a fascinating, layered and complete character without Daemon (not  that I don’t lurve them as a pair). And the acerbic and quick wit Armentrout has blessed her with continues to bake my cupcakes!

Then there’s Daemon *listens for the sighs and squeals of a thousand fangirls*. Daemon is such a deliciously infuriating and irresistible character and his actions in Onyx only make him that much more so! In book two we really get to see a softer, more vulnerable and honest side of our favorite hero. There were times while reading Onyx that I just wanted to hug that hunky-boy tight…but then, there were also times when he would say something so exasperatingly egotistical or condescending that I just wanted to knee him in his alien-baby maker.

And of course there’s the two of these characters together: sometimes they’re just Katy and Daemon, two people just hanging out, enjoying each other’s company; sometimes they’re KatyDaemon, two people who are either desperately trying to ignore their desire for each other and keep themselves from engaging in sextracurricular activites or they’re simply engaged in a razor-sharp battle of wits and bantering (and desperately refraining from going all Animal Planet on one another) and, my favorite, sometimes they’re Katy/Daemon, two people who genuinely love each other and in these moments all the scary, confusing, intense, amazing, wonderful, electric feelings between the two are palpable.

There is quite a bit of angst between these two though throughout this book; a lot of emotional pulling and pushing. It’s definitely an enticing and titillating angst of course, but I could have done with less of it (hey, my poor, anxious fangirling heart can only take so much!). And as much as I enjoy the heated banter between these two, there were moments when I just wanted to do this:

I love all the twists and unexpected revelations Armentrout throws at us and her characters. There’s a really suspenseful and gripping build-up surrounding all the questions Katy and readers have throughout the story (Who can be trusted? What do the DOD want? What’s being hidden? Who’s hiding it?), until this build-up explodes in the thrilling, heart-stopping last couple of chapters. I won’t spoil it, but there were tears, OMGing and No She Did Nots?! By the time I read the last cliffhangery word on the last cliffhangery page, my emotions were everywhere! I needed chocolate….and a nap…and book three!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: Jennifer Armentrout continues to bake my cupcakes with each smart, witty and steamy book she releases and Onyx is a fantastic edition to an already fabulous series. Fans of the first Lux book will definitely not be disappointed with this sequel. A must read book in a must read series!

(Re-Post) Review: OBSIDIAN (Lux Series #1)

Hey Cupcakes! In celebration of the Daemon Invasion, the 30 Days of Daemon Blog Tour and Obsidian's new cover (and because my blog will be lacking in post till next week) I decided to re-post my review of Obsidian using the new edition picture. You can find the original post, posted 12/5/11, HERE. Go Team DeLUX!!!

TITLE: Obsidian                                    SERIES: Lux #1
AUTHOR: Jennifer Armentrout     EDITION: 2nd
PUB DATE: 5/15/12                        PUB: Entangled Publishing

Starting over sucks. When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.And then he opened his mouth.Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot alien living next door marks me.You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades. If I don't kill him first, that is.

THREE(ish) WORDS: Refreshing. Fun. Awesome MC

MY REVIEW: I’ll admit that I was a bit wary when I read the synopsis to Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout. I’m not usually a big fan of alien stories, but I think Armentrout’s book has converted me! Obsidian is an enticing, gripping read that held me captivated from beginning to end and has one of the best written female YA characters that I’ve come across in a long while.

            MY BRIEF SUMMARY
When Katy moves to WV with her mom, she doesn’t expect her life to take any surprising or exciting turns. In fact, she expects the complete opposite. But what she gets is something she could never imagine possible. The boy next door, Daemon, is HOT…too bad he’s also a jerky asshat. Daemon’s assitude only gets worse after Katy develops a friendship with his twin sister Dee. Katy soon finds herself on the receiving end of one cold hatred from Daemon and his friends. But after Daemon saves Katy’s life twice, and uses his alien (yes alien!) powers to do so, she is forced to remain close to him for her own protection. With dangerous alien enemies all around, Katy must face her fear and her feelings for Dameon-equal parts attraction and repulsion.

            STORY
Arementrout’s Obsidian is hip, fun, and so very refreshing. I was completely engrossed the whole read through. The sci-fi elements are original, imaginative, and best of all, not too heavy; they don’t dominate the whole story. Yet, the romantic aspects don’t dominate the story either. There’s a really nice balance between all the elements, which creates a very well developed and interesting story.

The story paces nicely, nothing is ever rushed nor drags. The story itself takes place over about 5-6 months, which I really liked. This timeframe allowed me to really get to know the characters and allowed the story to build organically. Arementrout’s writing is superbly witty, sharp, and entertaining. The dialogue and the teenage voice in this book are spot on realistic; the teenagers actually sound and think like teenagers.

I was really intrigued by the backstory and history of the aliens-the Luxen and the Arum. Armentrout develops and offers this backstory without ever overwhelming or confusing readers. And the alien abilities are pretty cool, original, and fun to explore! There are a few action packed, fighting scenes that are expertly executed and left me breathless.

I really enjoyed “watching” Katy’s story unfold. Katy’s story is an easy one to fall into and to feel a part of. Throughout the book I felt more like a participant than a simple reader; the story really pulled me in.

The ending is climatic, exciting, a bit surprising, and sets up the next book nicely.

            CHARACTERS
This is very much a character driven story and the characters are excellent! Arementrout offers readers three engaging, compelling main characters, a slew of fabulous minor characters, and a wonderfully evil antagonist.

Katy is, of course, the main character and I just LOVE her. She really is one of the most refreshing, likable, and relatable YA characters I’ve come across all year! What I love about Katy is that her character’s likability and relatability is effortless. Armentrout didn’t go over the top trying to make Katy super unique or different, but she also didn’t make her terribly clichéd or stereotypical. Katy is wonderfully and refreshingly normal and average. But that’s not to say that she isn’t awesome, because she is. She’s smart, funny, sharp, loyal, and courageous. But she also has her insecurities and issues, making her so easy to connect with...yeah, I'm kind of crushing on Katy ;)
And I just loved the fact that Katy is a book review blogger! The amount of book blogger love and appreciation in this book is too awesome.

Daemon is equal parts infuriating and swoon-worthy. I really like the way that Armentrout doesn’t expect readers to find his arrogance, jerkiness, and overall assitude charming. Armentrout makes it ok for readers to hate him sometimes right along with Katy. And his less than appealing at times personality, actions, and words make sense and aren’t just there for the shock value or for the sake of adding snark and wit. Yet, he is a very layered character and his goodness, sweetness, and compassion do shine through.  Overall, Daemon is a love interest for our MC that readers will root for and be comfortable with.

Dee, Daemon’s sister, adds a lot of humor and bubbliness to the story. She’s a very sweet, fun, likable character. I love her friendship with Katy and her relationship with her brother.

The Arum make for satisfying and intriguing “bad guys”.

            ROMANCE
Katy and Daemon never actual date in this book, but the romantic chemistry between these two is off the charts undeniable and hot! There’s something very electric about the way these two interact, especially when they’re at each other’s throats. Even when they’re fighting and insulting one another, the air around them seems to sizzle and spark. They are a few physical scenes between the two that left me with a pounding heart and in need of a cold shower *fans self*.

Despite the intense nature between these two, I really love the fact that this relationship doesn’t turn Katy into a weak, lovesick, whiny girl like so many female YA characters. Yes, Katy does often think about Daemon’s hotness and fantasizes about him, but she isn’t simply spellbound by him. Her feelings for him don’t blind her to his flaws or his habit of being a jerk. And most importantly, she doesn’t allow Daemon to walk all over her. Katy isn’t afraid to stand up to him and demand to be treated with respect. I really love and admire Katy’s strength and refusal to allow Daemon to call all the shots.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS:  Obsidian turned out to be such a spectacular surprise. I’ve totally fallen in love with this book and with Armentrout’s characters. This is an awesome first volume in what is sure to be a phenomenal series. This is a MUST read book!

Review and Giveaway: Shadows (Lux 0.5) by Jennifer Armentrout

TITLE: Shadows                               SERIES: Lux #0.5
AUTHOR: Jennifer Armentrout    PUB DATE: 2/21/12
PUB: Entangled Teen                       FORMAT: Kindle ebook, 179 pgs
SOURCE: purchased

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable. Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved. Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

THREE WORDS: O.M.A! (Oh. My. Aliens!)...three more words: All Mah Cries T_T

MY REVIEW: Obsidian was one of the most fantabulous book surprises I read last year…simply put, I LOVED IT! So, I was super excited to finally read Shadows, the prequel novella to the Lux series, and admittedly a bit nervous. Obsidian was such a fab and well-crafted novel that I wasn’t sure if Jennifer Armentrout could produce such awesomeness twice…she totally did *fist bump to Jennifer*.

If you’ve already read Obsidian or if you haven’t but don’t mind being spoiled, then please continue reading. If you have not read Obsidian and do not want to be spoiled, then stop reading now…and go read book one in the Lux series! Since Shadows is a prequel to the series you may actually want to read it first; either way, you and the Lux series seriously need to get all chummy!

In Shadows we are introduced to Dawson, the third triplet in the Black trio. In Obsidian we learn that Daemon and Dee’s brother and his human girlfriend were killed and in Shadows we get to see the story of Dawson and Bethany from beginning to end *sobs*.

Armentrout’s alien filled world is so wonderfully addicting! This prequel novella had me enthralled from the heart-pounding prologue to the heart crushing last page. You’ll want to set some time aside when you begin this book because you won’t be able to put it down until you’re finished…and then once you do finish, and after you’re done simultaneously cursing and singing Armentrout’s praises, you’ll want to read/reread Obsidian…For Reals.

As with Obsidian, Shadows is hip, smart, laugh out loud funny, authentic, enchantingly, but not totally nauseatingly, romantic and deliciously sexy. Armentrout writes with a pitch perfect voice, razor sharp wit and with a clear understanding of who her audience is.
This novella is told from the POV of its different characters and this works very well. I love that Armentrout allows readers inside the heads of Dawson, Bethany, and even Daemon, especially since this is such a character driven story. The story takes place over a few months, and like in Obsidian, Armentrout uses this time frame and time lapse well. There is definitely a few months’ worth of story going on, but the story never drags; it’s perfectly paced.

There’s an excellent mix of action, romance, comedy and drama, and I’m continually impressed with Armentrout’s ability to balance all these elements effectively and captivatingly. We get to learn a bit more about the Blacks’ backstory and more about the Luxen people, their ways and history and Armentrout introduces these things naturally and without overwhelming readers.

As I stated above, this novella (and the series) is very character driven, and I’m so very much in love with all of the characters! As someone who has previously read Obsidian, I found it such an intriguing and fascinating experience to become acquainted with a pre-Obsidian and pre-Katy Daemon and Dee. I loved these two in book one, but now, knowing what they’ve gone through and being able to understand how and why they’re like they are in Obsidian, I think I love them even more. Armentrout has done a phenomenal job of showing all the apparent and subtle ways in which Daemon and Dee’s whole existence has progressed and changed from this novella to book one.

Dee is wickedly witty, undeniably charming and simply endearing. Daemon is intense, impossible to ignore, and dayumm sexy. I love and appreciate the fact that, as readers, we’ve been given this chance to intimately and intrinsically understand why Daemon is the way he is in book one. I feel even more connected and invested in both Dee and Daemon now.

But of course, this novella is about Dawson and Bethany’s story, and what a fun, romantic and heart-breaking story it is! Dawson may look just liken Daemon, but they are vastly different. Dawson is laid back, compassionate, sweetly charming and his sense of humor is more fun, versus Daemon’s more acerbic wit. Basically, Dawson is just as swoon-worthy as Daemon, but in completely different and compelling ways. Bethany is just as likable and relatable as Katy, but again in her own unique ways. Bethany has a quiet charm about her; she’s a bit reserved, but can definitely hold her own against Dawson.

Dawson and Bethany are instantly attracted to one another and feel an instant connection, but I wouldn’t classify this relationship as insta-love. There’s a definite natural progression to their relationship and I loved watching it unfold. While the spark between Dawson and Bethany is enticingly electric, there’s also something very beautiful and serene about it.
Going into this novella I knew what was coming in the end, but Armentrout still managed to take my breath away and squeeze out all my cries…and for some reason, I feel the need to thank her for that *smirks*. I also have some theories (or maybe they’re just the thoughts of a stubborn fangirl) about just what happens to Dawson and Bethany and I cannot wait to see if any of them are right…I can haz Onyx now, pwease?

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: Jennifer Armentrout has quickly become one of my favorite YA authors and her Lux series pretty much owns me…seriously, I feel like I should just hand over my heart to Jennifer and point to the sign on it that says “You break it, you buy it*”. Shadows is an awesome edition to a fantastic series and a definite MUST read!
