Character Interview & Giveaway: Eve from the Eve Hallows Series

I'm SO excited about today's March MG Madness stop because I got to sit down with one of my favorite middle-grade characters, Eve, from Robert Gray's awesome Eve Hallows Series. I love this series so much! Be sure to check out my reviews of book 1 and book 2 and check out book 3 this summer! Here's a little more about the first two books in the series...

11/8/11
Purchase: Amazon / B&N
For fourteen-year-old Eve Hallows, life can be summed up in one word—horrible.  She has the most horrible friends.  She lives in a horrible old castle.  Even her family is a bunch of horrible monsters.

However, in the monster-inhabited world of Gravesville—a world where messages are sent through Ouija boards, jack-o’-lanterns get facials to suit their moods, and the worst thing Eve has to deal with are those annoying zombie tourists who overrun her favorite graveyard during the Halloween season—horrible means wonderful.  And everything for Eve is perfectly horrible.

But her life is about to go head over heels when a mysterious group known as The Source starts terrorizing Gravesville.  Now she must move to the human world—where everything is opposite ... and for Eve, that's absolutely adorable!

9/16/12
Purchase: Amazon / B&N
Ever since encountering The Source and its minions on Halloween, Eve Hallows has found life surprisingly quiet … not to mention adorably boring!  So when Dad receives a Ouija message that she must return to Gravesville, Eve couldn't be happier—at least until she discovers the Director of URNS, also known as the Grim Reaper, has a special job for Eve … one that will lead her to New York City and to the true identity of The Source.

With The Book of Shrieks offering zero help and a new URNS agent driving the school boys—and Eve!—crazy, Eve's beginning to realize this whole saving-the-world nonsense isn't what it's cracked up to be.

All this and she still has to find The Book of Shadows....

Now, let's meet Eve...

Thanks so much Eve for agreeing to sit down with me today for this interview! And I just love this pizza place *looks around Ghoulicious Pizza*
It's so horrible of you to stop by, Aeicha.  And thank you for the cupcakes.  Mmm, pumpkin frosting, my favorite!
So, shall we begin?
I'm ready when you are.
Ok, Eve, we'll start with a simple get-to-know-you question: what three words best describe you?
Well, since I'm trying to save not one but two worlds, I think it should be Human Hero Extraordinaire.  To be honest, though, lately it seems more like Not Welcome Anywhere.

I know you had to move from your home in Gravesville, which must have sucked a lot. What do you miss most about Gravesville? What made your old home so horrible?
More than anything, I miss my graveyard.  My haunted castle sits on gravefront property, which is really hard to come by these days!  I used to be able to open my bedroom curtains and gaze out at the endless graveyard.  I seriously had the best view ever.  I miss my three best friends, Stephinica, Pia, and Sally, too.  They're werewolves.  Well, Sally and Pia are, anyway.  Stephinica is still at that awkward pre-wolf stage.  I also miss all the horrible shops, like Treats n' Treats, an all you can eat candy buffet.  You just can't find places like that in the human world … it's sad.
Living in the human world must be a strange experience for you. And I know that we humans can be a little weird at times. What's been the biggest adjustment for you living in our world? What's the most adorable thing you've discovered about us humans?
Where do I begin!  Oh, my Jack, everything is different here.  For one, you humans celebrate weird holidays.  I recently experienced this thing called Christmas.  Did you know there's this white-bearded freak that breaks into people's homes?  WHILE THEY ARE SLEEPING! And you humans leave him cookies and milk as like a sacrifice.  Hello?  It's bizarre.  And I'm still getting used to this whole inter-spider-web-whatever thing.  Everyone here seems to want to be connected to it at all times.  I have no idea why.
But, some humans and human world stuff must be at least a little bit horrible, right? What are some of the horrible or surprising things you've discovered and experienced in this world?
In a lot of ways, humans are like monsters.  Most humans, I've learned, are pretty nice, too.  So far no angry mobs have tried to chase me off with torches and pitchforks, which is a relief.  And, okay, I have to admit the candy here is pretty horrible.  Not as good as back home, of course, but totally edible.  But probably the best thing I've experienced here is friendship.  I have three great human friends, Carly Beth, Lucy, and Steve, and they've been a lot of help with fighting The Source, and finding the Nightmare Books, and surviving high school.

You, yourself are actually a human, right? But you have a family full of monsters (a shape-shifter, gorgon, ghoul, vampire, and werewolf). Growing up human among a bunch of horrible monsters must have been difficult at times. If you could be any kind of monster, which would you be?
Yup, I'm a human.  I have to say my family is pretty horrible.  And they're real supportive of my, um, condition, I guess you could say.  I mean, sure, my mom and dad are way too overprotective; and my little brother is annoying at times; and my grandma, well, she sometimes tries to drink my blood; and Grandpa's a total party animal.  But I wouldn't trade them for any family in any world.

If I could be any monster, I think I'd want to be a witch.  I love spells and magic and all that.  And it would be horrible to be able to turn some creatures—yeah, I'm looking at you Stacey Maxwell—into toads, or newts, or wingless bats.

Since you moved here, you've been on some dangerous and exciting adventures thanks to The Source and the Books of Shrieks and the Book of Shadows. Can you tell us a bit about those adventures?
I know, right?  Things got all sorts of crazy once I moved to the human world!  Not only do I have to find all of theNightmare Books, I have this Source character and its minions hunting me down.  Me!  Can you believe it?  Thank Jack I have my friends and family to help me.  I don't know what I'd do without them.  Oh, and I should add that I'm close to finding the next book, The Book of Shivers.  It's all hush-hush right now, but everyone will be able to read about those adventures soon enough.
Ok, so how about some quick Eve Favorites?
Favorite color?
Black
Favorite holiday?
Halloween, of course
Favorite book?
I haven't read many human books, but in Gravesville there's this one called NIGHT OF THE HUMANS.  It's about a family of vamps that go on a vacation and get terrorized by this marauding band of humans.  It's the scariest book I ever read!
Favorite pizza topping?
Ugh, to be honest I hate pizza.  Since I serve it to humans all day, the last thing I want to look at is pizza!  But if I had to pick one topping, I'd have to go with pepperoni.  It's mysterious to me.  What is it even made of?
Favorite song?
My favorite band is the Ghastly Brothers.  They live in Gravesville, by they way.  They have this song called Graveyard Girl, which always makes me smile.  Human music isn't too bad, either.  My friend Carly Beth is always playing this stuff called Pop, which I kind of like, though I can't recall ever hearing anything actually pop … whatever.  I honestly don't know any of the names of the songs, though.
Now, all your adventures have been diligently recorded by your biographer. So, what do ya think of this Robert Gray guy? Do you think he's doing a good job of writing your story? You can be honest with me, I won't tell him anything you say *smirks*
He's so annoying!  And, between you and me, he's got like a severe case of halitosis or something; his breath smells like a zombie's underwear!  And don't get me started on his nostril hairs.  OMJ, I think he's hiding a werewolf up his nose.  Oh, and the guy's a total control freak.  I mean, who's the star here?  Not him, that's for sure.  Yeah, so if you happen to know anyone else who can write my story, please let me know, because I'm taking applications.
Wow, this has been so fun and enlightening, Eve! Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions and giving us a chance to get to know you better.
Thank you so much for spending some time with me, Aeicha.
Now, I just have one more question: what do you recommend I order? I'm starving!
Oh, definitely the Monster Stromboli. I'll have dad make you one right away.

Now that was a fun interview! Thank you so much Eve for stopping by and thanks Robert Gray for letting me hang out with his character!

Eve Hallows Book Blast: giveaway

I'm horribly excited to be participating in this book blast today! Robert Gray's Eve Hallows books are some of my favorite MG reads...

EVE HALLOWS AND THE BOOK OF SHRIEKS (BOOK 1)

Praise for Eve Hallows and the Book of Shrieks:

"Move over, Neil Gaiman’s CORALINE and THE GRAVEYARD BOOK … make room, Lemony Snicket’s A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS … you’ve got company and competition for shelf space!" -- THE HORROR FICTION REVIEW

"WOW! What an absolutely horrible book (horrible meaning fantastic!) ... This book was laugh out loud funny.  I loved when Mom accidentally turned people to stone.  Dad's crazy attempts at running a pizza store were just hysterical." -- KIDS 'N' BOOKS

"This is the perfect book to be read aloud, read at night under the covers or simply devoured in one sitting. Robert Gray’s Eve Hallows and the Book of Shrieks simply shines with all of its fun creepiness, compelling characters and stellar writing. A MUST read for any MG fan!" -- WORD SPELUNKING

"Eve Hallows is highly imaginative without being too complex for its target audience. Fall in love with Eve, her friends and her family of adorable monsters. Lose yourself in a light read that will remind you of those days when your English teacher just want you to read something, anything. This book is it. The one that you wish you read when you were in grade school." -- JOYOUS READS

"Overall, this book was fantastic. It presents an admirable role model as well as a strong family unit which will benefit young readers. When so many books right now have presented teens in a not-so-flattering light, it is so wonderful to find a book like this one." -- BOOK COVER JUSTICE

All this and she still has to find The Book of Shadows...

THREE WORDS: Spooktacular Fun & Laughs

MY REVIEW: Robert Gray's Eve Hallows and the Book of Shrieks (book one in The Nightmare series) was one of my favorite MG reads last year and I had been eagerly awaiting the release of the second book all summer. And it turns out Eve Hallows and the Book of Shadows is even more awesome and fun than the first book!

After the events on Halloween, when Eve and her friends came face to face with The Source and his buggy minions, life has been rather boring in the human world. But then Eve is summoned back to Gravesville for a meeting with the Director of URNS, who happens to be Death himself, the Grim Reaper. Death gives a Eve a new job to find the Book of Shadows and a new annoyingly perfect URNS agent protector, Jasmine. The search for the book takes Eve and her friends all the way to New York City where they must battle The Source's creepy new mutations and even The Source himself. Life for Eve just got adorably, but kinda horribly, exciting!

Robert Gray's The Nightmare Series is definitely one of my favorite new MG series! Like the first book, Eve Hallows and the Book of Shadows is full of such thrilling, wacky and creeptastic fun, absolutely horrible (remember, horrible means awesome) characters, all of which Gray captures with a perfect middle-grade voice.

Gray is a spectacular and spooktacular storyteller! The story he weaves in both book one and in Eve Hallows and the Book of Shadows will captivate readers of all ages from beginning to end. The book is full of laugh-out-loud-make-you-gigglesnort funnies, with an awesome dose of sassy and sarcasm. I love how Gray manages to add the perfect mix of dark and whimsy to his story, creating an atmosphere and world that is charmingly creepy and enchantingly eerie. And best of all, the story is spooky and kooky, but still absolutely appropriate for all readers.

Full of wicked cool imagination, Eve Hallows and the Book of Shadows is stuffed full of all things awesome, unusual and the supernatural...like a Sweet Transformation Party (think a Sweet 16 for a teenage werewolf), zambpires (zombie+vampire), werebies (werewolf+zombie), horribly unique Black Friday decorations, and an annoyingly perfect succubus who has ALL the boys under her spell. The fun and horrible weirdness never stops!

I just adore my horrible girl Eve! I love her spot on sarcastic, honest, and endearing teenage voice; her witty observations; and her courage, loyalty and thirst for adventure. Eve's three human friends, Carly Beth; Lucy; and Steve, really shine in this book and I just love the genuine and loyal friendship and love between this foursome. Death is such an intriguing, enamoring, and totally surprising character. Now, everyone knows I LOVE a great villain, and The Source is a fantastically chilling and entertaining villain.

Eve's search for the Book of Shadows takes her and her friends to NYC and on a fast-paced, adventure full of zampbires, werebies, and an OMGgasp-worthy climactic confrontation with The Source. Like me, readers will be riveted by all the thrills, chills, and scary moments. And the surprises keep coming all the way to the final page and I, for one, can't wait to find out what happens next.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: I'm completely in love with this series and Eve Hallows and the Book of Shadows is a fantastically and frightfully fun sequel! Readers of all ages looking for a spooktacular story full of awesome characters and stellar writing will definitely find what they're looking for in this series. A MUST read book in a MUST read series...perfect for some Halloween reading!
