Fantastic Reads Round-up!

Hello readers and happy October! Today I have four fantastic new and upcoming books to share with y'all...

I received copies of the following books from their publishers, for review purposes.

Helloflo: The Guide, Period.
By Naama Bloom
October 17, 2017
Dutton
When will I get boobs? Does wearing a tampon hurt? What's the deal with menstrual cups? Seriously, when will I get boobs?

Honest, funny, and unafraid of the messy, real-life facts about a girl's changing body, this is definitely not your mother's puberty book. HelloFlo founder Naama Bloom's mission is to create informed, empowered young women who are unafraid to ask questions and make the best choices for themselves and their bodies. A celebration of women's bodies and all the confusing, uncomfortable, silly, transformative, and powerful changes that occur during puberty.

This full-color book--written by HelloFlo founder, Naama Bloom, and journalist Glynnis MacNicol--features bright, diverse, approachable illustrations and infographics, doctor-vetted information, and personal testimonials from real girls and women.

From the very first sentence (“There is no such thing as clean underwear.”) it is apparent that this smart and savvy guide is definitely not your mother’s puberty book. In chapters like “Beating Around the Bush” and “Shark Week,” Bloom lays out the facts, fuss-free—everything girls might want to know, from how to insert a tampon (illustrations included) to if swimming while menstruating attracts sharks (luckily, no). Bloom, who incorporates science, history, economics, and culture into her guide, takes care not to talk down to girls and assures them at every turn that what is “right” is different for everyone. In HELLOFLO: The Guide, Period, girls will find:
  • CONTEXT: Colorful graphics on the history of body hair, breast shape, and sanitary products explain that while there are – and have always been – cultural trends and opinions on women’s bodies, girls should choose to do what they are most comfortable with (see pages 50-53).
  • DIVERSITY: The inclusive illustrations and information in HELLOFLO: The Guide, Period, insure every girl can find herself, and her experiences, reflected in the book.
  • FREQUIENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: The book answers HelloFlo’s most common questions, from “Can I lose my virginity if I use a tampon?” to “Is vaginal discharge normal?” with wisdom and care.
  • PROFESSIONAL HELP: Puberty affects every part of the body, so the book includes Doctor Q&As with a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, and a family therapist.
  • SELF-CARE TIPS: Chapters on brain development, hormones, stress, and sisterhood address the rarely-talked-about part of growing up: emotional wellbeing.

I so wish I had this book when I was a preteen! Naama Bloom takes readers on a wild puberty filled journey from girlhood to womanhood and everything in between. Wonderfully informative, easily accessible, and awesomely laugh-out-loud funny, Helloflo is daring, hip, and irresistible. Facts are presented in age appropriate, yet matter of fact, ways, with helpful diagrams and illustrations...and I love that Bloom doesn’t shy away from topics. Young girls will not only find Helloflo helpful and educational, but will find a sense of comfort and even excitement surrounding their changing bodies. I would love to put this in the hands of every preteen girl!

I Am Gandhi
(Ordinary People Change The World)
By Brad Meltzer
October 3, 2017
Dial Books
Gandhi's peaceful revolution is the focus of this picture book, part of the inspiring New York Times bestselling biography series about heroes.

As a young man in India, Gandhi saw firsthand how people were treated unfairly. Refusing to accept injustice, he came up with a brilliant way to fight back through quiet, peaceful protest. He took his methods with him from South Africa back to India, where he led a nonviolent revolution that freed his country from British rule. Through his calm, steady heroism, Gandhi changed everything for India and inspired civil rights movements all over the world, proving that the smallest of us can be the most powerful.

This friendly, fun biography series focuses on the traits that made our heroes great--the traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Each book tells the story of one of America's icons in a lively, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers and that always includes the hero's childhood influences. At the back are an excellent timeline and photos.

This picture book series provides a cute, easily accessible, and engaging way to introduce little readers to some of the most prolific people in history!
