A Tale Of Highly Unusual Magic

Harper Collins
Bestseller and author of the popular middle grade series Confectionately Yours Lisa Papademetriou is back with a magical, page-turning adventure for readers of all ages—a touching tale about destiny and the invisible threads that link us all, ultimately, to one another.

Kai and Leila are both finally having an adventure. For Leila, that means a globe-crossing journey to visit family in Pakistan for the summer; for Kai, it means being stuck with her crazy great-aunt in Texas while her mom looks for a job. In each of their bedrooms, they discover a copy of a blank, old book called The Exquisite Corpse. Kai writes three words on the first page—and suddenly, they magically appear in Leila's copy on the other side of the planet. Kai's words are soon followed by line after line of the long-ago, romantic tale of Ralph T. Flabbergast and his forever-love, Edwina Pickle. As the two take turns writing, the tale unfolds, connecting both girls to each other, and to the past, in a way they never could have imagined.

A heartfelt, vividly told multicultural story about fate and how our stories shape it.

*****************************************

In A Tale Of Highly Unusual Magic, Kai and Leila's lives and fates are forever changed by a book called The Exquisite Corpse and author Lisa Papademetriou has asked us to answer the following question:

What is your book fate—what book has changed your perspective, your heart, your life?

There are SO MANY books that have changed my life in a million different ways. My earliest memories of truly loving to read are filled with The Berenstain Bears books. Then as I got older, I discovered other amazing books--The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe; Anne of Green GablesLittle Women, The Baby-Sitter's Club series-- then when I became a teenager, I started reading more "grown-up" books-- Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Lord of the Rings, etc.

But, the one book/series that has changed me the most as a reader, changed my perspective, heart, and life, is one that I think many people will choose: the Harry Potter series! I didn't start reading this series until my late teens/early twenties and they forever changed the way I view the power of books and stories. By the time I started this series, I had given "kids books" up and this series made me fall in love with middle-grade and young-adult literature again. It rejuvenated my imagination. It made me believe in magic again. This series came into my life by total chance (I didn't seek it out) and I really believe it was true book fate that brought us together :)

  7. It was a book I read in middle school called Dragon's Milk. It was the first fantasy book I really remember reading and the first book with such descriptions of things that I was in awe of what a book could do.
