Matilda 25th Anniversary Blog Tour {Giveaway}

I'm so excited to be participating in the Matilda 25th Anniversary Blog Tour! Can you believe this magical book is 25 years old?! Below you can learn more about this book and the new musical based on it, and enter to win an awesome prize pack...

Matilda is turning 25 this year! Kind of unbelievable, right? How can it already be 25 years since this wonderfully witty, intelligent five-year-old sprang onto the literary scene, inspiring all of us to read more and fight the man with our powers of telekinesis (Er, or just wish we had powers of telekinesis)? We’re celebrating this milestone with an epic 25-stop blog tour! Follow along to find out how your favorite bloggers feel about Matilda, and for a chance to win a Matilda prize pack at each and every stop!

Matilda is a genius. Unfortunately, her family treats her like a dolt. Her crooked car-salesman father and loud, bingo-obsessed mother think Matilda's only talent is as a scapegoat for everything that goes wrong in their miserable lives. But it's not long before the sweet and sensitive child decides to fight back. Faced with practical jokes of sheer brilliance, her parents don't stand a chance.
Matilda applies her untapped mental powers to rid the school of the evil, child-hating headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, and restore her nice teacher, Miss Honey, to financial security.
Everyone who’s read Matilda knows how much she loves books. In Matilda, Dahl writes, “The walk [to the library] took only ten minutes and this allowed her two glorious hours sitting quietly by herself in a cosy corner devouring one book after another. When she had read every single children’s book in the place, she started wandering round in search of something else.” Every Monday, bloggers on the Matilda 25th Anniversary tour will write about how they fell in love with books, just like Matilda!

Books have always been an important part of my life. My parents tell stories about how I would sit completely enraptured as a child, even as young as a baby, as I had book after book read to me. Some of my earliest memories are of me reading. I remember being about five years old and lining up all my Berenstain Bears books (I had a ton!) on the floor, then spending hours reading each one of them. I wasn't a very adventurous or particularly outgoing child, but in books I could have grand adventure after grand adventure. As a child, I fell in love with what books gave me: magic, new worlds, the chance to be a heroine, characters who felt like best friends. In the third grade one of my friends gave me a copy of Matilda for my birthday and I instantly became such a fan of this magical, clever girl. Matilda was the first character that showed young me that being a booknerd wasn't something to be ashamed of, and to this day it's a title I wear proudly!

Did you know Matilda is now a Tony Award-nominated Broadway Musical? The show opened in April and has already been nominated for 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical! Enter to win a copy of the Matilda the Musical soundtrack, a Matilda the Musical poster, and a paperback copy of Matilda by Roald Dahl! About Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, South Wales, and went to Repton School in England. His parents were Norwegian, so holidays were spent in Norway. As he explains in Boy, he turned down the idea of university in favor of a job that would take him to "a wonderful faraway place.” In 1933 he joined the Shell Company, which sent him to Mombasa in East Africa. When World War II began in 1939 he became a fighter pilot and in 1942 was made assistant air attaché in Washington, where he started to write short stories. His first major success as a writer for children was in 1964. Thereafter his children's books brought him increasing popularity, and when he died children mourned the world over. Matilda was published just two years before he died. Quentin Blake, the first Children's Laureate of the United Kingdom, has illustrated most of Roald Dahl's children's books.

  2. Matilda has been my favorite movie since I was a little kid. I've loved to read since before I saw that movie, but ever since then I've been hoarding huge stacks of books. :)

  3. Just like Matilda, I faced a Trunchbull in elementary school. Matilda gave me the courage to overcome!

  4. I used to idolize Matilda when I was younger, because I related a lot to her. I was exceptionally smart but in a not-so-great home that wasn't always kind to me. Like Matilda, I lost myself in books, and I got through it just fine :)

  5. I've never read Matilda (gasp!). I know, it's shocking, and probably illegal. But sadly it is true. I am hoping to rectify this situation as soon as possible. :)

  7. I love MATILDA, and I love all Roald Dahl's books. In fact, during the past couple of years at my son's elementary school, I've had a CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY station and a THE BFG station at the big book fair they have. My son (10) is desperate to go to NYC to see the Broadway show!!

    Thanks for the giveaway, Aeicha. Fingers crossed for everyone!

  8. My 6-year old son *loves* Matilda. He's watched the movie at least a dozen times and read the book. I'm hoping to be able to take him to see the musical sometime soon.

  9. I love Matilda! I always felt like books were my best friends when I was growing up, so even though I didn't have the kind of horrible childhood she did, I always related to the character.

    My favorite book when I was a child was called THE FIRE CAT. I asked my older sister to read it to me so often that she got tired of it... and so she taught me how to read it all by myself. (I was 4 years old.) And thus began a lifelong love affair with books. :)

  10. My daughters loved this book. They're jealous the play isn't near them (yet). (Of course, they like all things Roald Dahl.)

  12. I love Matilda because I can actually relate to her. Matilda was one of my favorite books when I was younger. I also liked The Phantom Tollbooth and I'm sure hundreds of others, but that's the first one that came to mind. :)
