Cupcakes, I'm excited to have Inger Iversen here today for an interview! Inger is the author of the soon to be released Few Are Angels...
When loved ones die, we are often left to learn to be content with life without them. Ella is faced with the challenge of moving on after her parents’ death. Though her sanity is tested by visions, voices, and a devastating breakdown, she still believes that she can live a normal life as a wallflower. Then she meets Kale. Pale, vigilant, and mysterious, he challenges her to come to terms with what she really is and where her second sight has come from. The raven-haired stranger tells her a secret that will shatter her goal of remaining in the background and place her smack in the middle of an on-going conflict. Will Ella accept who and what she really is, or will it all be too much? How much change can Ella handle in one lifetime?
Q. Can you describe your novel FEW ARE ANGELS in three words?
Ha, you are only asking for three words and this question took me the longest to answer!
Captivating, Dark and Passionate.
Q. Now using as many words as you’d like, can you tell us a little bit about your novel?
Ella tries to pick up the pieces of her broken life after losing her parents while fighting the visions and voices that challenge her sanity. Soon after she meets Kale she learns that those visions are more than she ever thought they were and put her in a powerful yet dangerous position.
Kale has lived more than one hundred years searching for Ella in order to protect her from the Dark Prince who intends to use her for her gift of Second Sight, but Kale realizes that though Ella needs protection from The Dark Prince, there will also come a time when she will need to be protected from his secret as well.
Q. Where did the idea behind FEW ARE ANGELS come from?
Honestly, I know almost every writer says this, but the Few Are Angels story originated in a dream. The crazy part about that is the scene in my dream is not in the book! As the dream grew bigger it transformed into daydreams and finally I realized that I needed to write it even though I was already writing another novel.
Q. Do you have a favorite character that you’ve written? Have you found any of your characters hard to write?
I love all of my characters but for some reason Alex stands out. In Few Are Angels Alex plays an important role in Ella’s life and in the second book, he grows and becomes even more important. I based Alex off my own brother, who over time has shown me how a good kid grows into a strong and worthy man. Of all of my characters Alex was one of the hardest to write. It’s hard to write in the voice of a nineteen year old guy!
Q. How difficult or easy has the writing process been? What’s been the best thing about writing your book? The most surprising thing?
The writing process for me was really easy once I incorporated music. I have a playlist for Few Are Angels, and some of the songs were played more than 65 times! When I wrote the scene where and Kale kiss for the first time I listened to Imogen Heap’s Come Here Boy over and over until I finished the scene.
The best thing about writing this book was that I did want I said I was going to do when I was a child; I put my dreams on paper and it is a wonderful yet terrifying experience. The most surprising thing was how hard it was for me to give this book to my editor. I was so afraid to take that next step that I almost didn't and then a wonderful woman told me that she had faith in me, so I sent it in. Thanks mom :]
Q. What’s the one book you think everybody should read at least once?
I’ve been asked this before and I think I will give a different answer this time because I have so many suggestions. I think everyone should read Living Dead Girl, by Elizabeth Scott. It’s dark and powerful. If Scott’s goal was to brand my brain with her powerful words, than she was more than successful! It’s dark, sad and gritty. I cried and worried for the main character and I will never ever forget her.
Q. What’s the last AMAZING book you’ve read?
I had to get my Kindle out for this one! Keep in mind that I am behind with reading; Few Are Angels took the majority of my time this year. The last AMAZING book that I read was The Iron Quill by Shelena Shorts. I love Wes and Sophie’s story!
Q. If you could switch places with any character from any book who would it be and why?
So many choices… This time I pick Meghan from The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. I was never really into fairies until I read that series. Kagawa created an awesome world full of evil and beautiful fey.
Q. Who is your favorite literary villain…who do you just love to hate or hate to love?
Wow this one is hard. I don’t know, I guess I would have to say Cam from Lauren Kate’s Fallen series, but since I haven’t finished the series I am not sure if he is truly a villain. I have Torment and Passion sitting on my mantle waiting for me to read them. :}
Q. If you were to bake a cupcake inspired by FEW ARE ANGELS what would it taste like, what would it look like and what would you call it?
The cupcake itself would be a decadent dark chocolate stuffed with a yummy raspberry filling and a sweet French vanilla butter cream frosting. I think I would call it: Sweet Passion.
Thank you so much Inger for stopping by Word Spelunking and giving us all the chance to get to know you and your work a little better!
I love Cam! The Iron Fey series really got me into fairy books. I don't have very interesting dreams though. I don't think I have ever been inspired by any dreams to write anything. Great interview!
