"The first thing I saw was the blood. It had seeped across the carpet almost all the way to the hall from where the woman was lying. She was curled on the floor by the foot of the bed, facing toward me. Her eyes were closed, but her mouth was pulled back in a grimace like she'd been snarling when she died. Her arms were wrapped around a toddler, who was  staring at nothing, his face pale and blue. His pajamas were soaked red. It looked like she'd sliced herself open from wrist to elbows and held him while she bed out."
