I'm SO excited about today's March MG Madness stop because I got to sit down with one of my favorite middle-grade characters, Eve, from Robert Gray's awesome Eve Hallows Series. I love this series so much! Be sure to check out my reviews of book 1 and book 2 and check out book 3 this summer! Here's a little more about the first two books in the series...
11/8/11
For fourteen-year-old Eve Hallows, life can be summed up in one word—horrible. She has the most horrible friends. She lives in a horrible old castle. Even her family is a bunch of horrible monsters.
However, in the monster-inhabited world of Gravesville—a world where messages are sent through Ouija boards, jack-o’-lanterns get facials to suit their moods, and the worst thing Eve has to deal with are those annoying zombie tourists who overrun her favorite graveyard during the Halloween season—horrible means wonderful. And everything for Eve is perfectly horrible.
But her life is about to go head over heels when a mysterious group known as The Source starts terrorizing Gravesville. Now she must move to the human world—where everything is opposite ... and for Eve, that's absolutely adorable!
9/16/12
Ever since encountering The Source and its minions on Halloween, Eve Hallows has found life surprisingly quiet … not to mention adorably boring! So when Dad receives a Ouija message that she must return to Gravesville, Eve couldn't be happier—at least until she discovers the Director of URNS, also known as the Grim Reaper, has a special job for Eve … one that will lead her to New York City and to the true identity of The Source.
With The Book of Shrieks offering zero help and a new URNS agent driving the school boys—and Eve!—crazy, Eve's beginning to realize this whole saving-the-world nonsense isn't what it's cracked up to be.
All this and she still has to find The Book of Shadows....
Now, let's meet Eve...
Thanks
so much Eve for agreeing to sit down with me today for this
interview! And I just love this pizza place *looks around Ghoulicious
Pizza*
It's so horrible of you to stop by, Aeicha. And thank you for the cupcakes. Mmm, pumpkin frosting, my favorite!
So,
shall we begin?
I'm ready when you are.
Ok,
Eve, we'll start with a simple get-to-know-you question: what three
words best describe you?
Well, since I'm trying to save not one but two worlds, I think it should be Human Hero Extraordinaire. To be honest, though, lately it seems more like Not Welcome Anywhere.
I
know you had to move from your home in Gravesville, which must have
sucked a lot. What do you miss most about Gravesville? What made your
old home so horrible?
More than anything, I miss my graveyard. My haunted castle sits on gravefront property, which is really hard to come by these days! I used to be able to open my bedroom curtains and gaze out at the endless graveyard. I seriously had the best view ever. I miss my three best friends, Stephinica, Pia, and Sally, too. They're werewolves. Well, Sally and Pia are, anyway. Stephinica is still at that awkward pre-wolf stage. I also miss all the horrible shops, like Treats n' Treats, an all you can eat candy buffet. You just can't find places like that in the human world … it's sad.
Living
in the human world must be a strange experience for you. And I know
that we humans can be a little weird at times. What's been the
biggest adjustment for you living in our world? What's the most
adorable thing you've discovered about us humans?
Where do I begin! Oh, my Jack, everything is different here. For one, you humans celebrate weird holidays. I recently experienced this thing called Christmas. Did you know there's this white-bearded freak that breaks into people's homes? WHILE THEY ARE SLEEPING! And you humans leave him cookies and milk as like a sacrifice. Hello? It's bizarre. And I'm still getting used to this whole inter-spider-web-whatever thing. Everyone here seems to want to be connected to it at all times. I have no idea why.
But,
some humans and human world stuff must be at least a little bit
horrible, right? What are some of the horrible or surprising things
you've discovered and experienced in this world?
In a lot of ways, humans are like monsters. Most humans, I've learned, are pretty nice, too. So far no angry mobs have tried to chase me off with torches and pitchforks, which is a relief. And, okay, I have to admit the candy here is pretty horrible. Not as good as back home, of course, but totally edible. But probably the best thing I've experienced here is friendship. I have three great human friends, Carly Beth, Lucy, and Steve, and they've been a lot of help with fighting The Source, and finding the Nightmare Books, and surviving high school.
You,
yourself are actually a human, right? But you have a family full of
monsters (a shape-shifter, gorgon, ghoul,vampire, and werewolf).
Growing up human among a bunch of horrible monsters must have been
difficult at times. If you could be any kind of monster, which would
you be?
Yup, I'm a human. I have to say my family is pretty horrible. And they're real supportive of my, um, condition, I guess you could say. I mean, sure, my mom and dad are way too overprotective; and my little brother is annoying at times; and my grandma, well, she sometimes tries to drink my blood; and Grandpa's a total party animal. But I wouldn't trade them for any family in any world.
If I could be any monster, I think I'd want to be a witch. I love spells and magic and all that. And it would be horrible to be able to turn some creatures—yeah, I'm looking at you Stacey Maxwell—into toads, or newts, or wingless bats.
Since
you moved here, you've been on some dangerous and exciting adventures
thanks to The Source and the Books of Shrieks and the Book of
Shadows. Can you tell us a bit about those adventures?
I know, right? Things got all sorts of crazy once I moved to the human world! Not only do I have to find all of theNightmare Books, I have this Source character and its minions hunting me down. Me! Can you believe it? Thank Jack I have my friends and family to help me. I don't know what I'd do without them. Oh, and I should add that I'm close to finding the next book, The Book of Shivers. It's all hush-hush right now, but everyone will be able to read about those adventures soon enough.
Ok,
so how about some quick Eve Favorites?
Favorite
color?
Black
Favorite
holiday?
Halloween, of course
Favorite
book?
I haven't read many human books, but in Gravesville there's this one called NIGHT OF THE HUMANS. It's about a family of vamps that go on a vacation and get terrorized by this marauding band of humans. It's the scariest book I ever read!
Favorite
pizza topping?
Ugh, to be honest I hate pizza. Since I serve it to humans all day, the last thing I want to look at is pizza! But if I had to pick one topping, I'd have to go with pepperoni. It's mysterious to me. What is it even made of?
Favorite
song?
My favorite band is the Ghastly Brothers. They live in Gravesville, by they way. They have this song called Graveyard Girl, which always makes me smile. Human music isn't too bad, either. My friend Carly Beth is always playing this stuff called Pop, which I kind of like, though I can't recall ever hearing anything actually pop … whatever. I honestly don't know any of the names of the songs, though.
Now,
all your adventures have been diligently recorded by your biographer.
So, what do ya think of this Robert Gray guy? Do you think he's doing
a good job of writing your story? You can be honest with me, I won't
tell him anything you say *smirks*
He's so annoying! And, between you and me, he's got like a severe case of halitosis or something; his breath smells like a zombie's underwear! And don't get me started on his nostril hairs. OMJ, I think he's hiding a werewolf up his nose. Oh, and the guy's a total control freak. I mean, who's the star here? Not him, that's for sure. Yeah, so if you happen to know anyone else who can write my story, please let me know, because I'm taking applications.
Wow,
this has been so fun and enlightening, Eve! Thanks again for taking
the time to answer my questions and giving us a chance to get to know
you better.
Thank you so much for spending some time with me, Aeicha.
Now,
I just have one more question: what do you recommend I order? I'm
starving!
Oh, definitely the Monster Stromboli. I'll have dad make you one right away.
Now that was a fun interview! Thank you so much Eve for stopping by and thanks Robert Gray for letting me hang out with his character!
