Cover Reveal: The Summer I Became A Nerd by Leah Rae Miller

Today I'm participating in the cover reveal for Leah Rae Miller's
The Summer I Became a Nerd
from Entangled Teen...

On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever.

Diary of a Penguin-Napper Blog Tour: Character Interview & Giveaway

I'm excited to have the Diary of a Penguin-Napper Blog Tour stopping by today with a character interview and a giveaway! Be sure to check out my review.

3 weeks ...
2 boys ...
1 little penguin ...
What could possibly go wrong?
When 11 (and a half) year old Marty is partnered up with Jessica on the overnight science trip, he thinks all of this dreams are about to come true.  It's his big chance to impress the most beautiful girl in Year 7 (and probably the world) and he wouldn't miss it for anything.
Only problem is: Marty can't afford to go on the overnight trip. Yet.
Inspired by the urban myth that it is possible to steal a penguin from the zoo on a school visit, Diary of a Penguin-napper is a hilarious tale of growing up, bending the rules and how one big fuss can be caused by stealing just one little penguin.

Author Sally Harris is sitting down with her character Marty for an interview...

When I thought about interviewing one of the characters from Diary of a Penguin-
napper, there is one character who immediately comes to mind - 11 (and a half) year old penguin-napper, Marty Finn.

It might be hard for me to capture his personality in this short interview, but I’ll try! So, let’s meet Marty ...

Thank you for agreeing to do this interview, Marty.

No problem. It makes a nice change from having to shovel elephant dung at the zoo.

Tell us about your main goal in life.

To impress Jessica Blue enough to get her to go out with me.

Ah, yes. So tell us about Jessica. Don’t you have a little crush on her?

Yes. Well, who doesn't? She is the most beautiful girl in Year 7 and probably the world. She has this amazing hair that swishes when she walks. Swish, swish, swish. That hair is really fantastic. It is like watching a shampoo commercial.

And does she feel the same about you?

Of course she does. Or at least, I think she does. Or least, I wish she would. Actually, to be honest, I'm not sure that she exactly knows my name. That is why it is so important that we get to go on the overnight science trip together. That is my big
chance to impress her.

So what is standing in your way?

There are a few things that seem to be causing me a bit of trouble at the moment. The first thing is that Mum can't afford to pay for me to go on the overnight science trip and my sister, Jen, told her it was a waste of time anyway. The other problem
is the school bully, Tom the Terrible. He has repeated Year 7 four times and he has a full beard. A beard! It is very manly and Jessica seems to like him. That is a big
(hairy) problem for me.

But do you think you can overcome these problems?

I hope so. I've got my best mate, Turds, on hand and we have come up with a plan to help me get Jessica's attention. Having said that, with Turds around, our plans either go really well or they could turn out to be a disaster.

Oh dear. What’s the worst thing that has happened to you in the last week?

Well, let's see. I've been caught by my mother stealing a penguin, questioned by the police and have spent the best part of the weekend up to my elbows in elephant manure. What you should be asking is: could your week get any worse?

…And that would be Marty! I promise, he’s much more interesting, funny and likable
in the actual book, but it’s hard to show personality in a short interview.

Thank you Sally and Marty for that interview!

THREE WORDS: Super Cute & Fun

MY REVIEW: With a title like Diary of a Penguin-napper, I just knew I was in for a wild and wacky ride when I began Sally Harris' middle-grade novel. And I was very right. This quick read is chock full of both the wild and the wacky!

Diary of a Penguin-napper follows the adventures of one eleven year old Marty, as he and his best friend Turds set out to kidnap a penguin from the zoo. Marty is paired up with his crush and the most beautiful girl in Year 7, Jessica, for an overnight science trip, but there's one little problem- Marty's mom can't afford the trip. Thus, the two young boys resort to penguin-napping and selling, and hilarity and mayhem ensue.

At a little over 150 pages, Diary of a Penguin-napper is a super quick, but super cute and fun read. Sally Harris has concocted an imaginative and exciting tale that will have readers laughing out loud and ready to put their own clever schemes into motion.

Because of the book's shorter length, delightful adventure, and funny dialogue I easily devoured it in one sitting, not wanting to put it down until I knew how Marty's story ended. Harris begins the story at the end and works backwards, as Marty tells his tale to his mother and the two cops who have shown up for the missing penguin. I like this “starting at the end” structure because it really makes you feel like you too, are being told a story. I felt like I was sitting in that living room with Marty, his mom, and the cops, munching on cookies and being delighted and amused by the unbelievable and engrossing story.

And what a zany, funny story it is! I love how outrageous and outlandish the idea of kidnapping a penguin from a zoo sounds, yet at the same time, like Marty and Turds, I too, totally believed it made perfect sense and could be pulled off. It's the kind of scheme that you know can't end well, but you must see how it plays out. And this penguin-napping scheme definitely kept me entertained and full of giggles. Harris writes with an age-appropriate voice that is both cheeky and adorable.

Harris' characters are a quirky, charming bunch. Marty narrates his own tale, so we get to know him the best, and he's an endearing guy. I love that Marty did everything in the name of love! Turds is the kind of BFF one need for a penguin-napping scheme, he's loyal, handy, and not afraid to get in trouble. And, of course, we have the lovely and surprisingly sweet Jessica.

The book ends on a satisfying and happy note that had me “Awww'ing”.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: Diary of a Penguin-napper is an amusing, cute, and fun read that will entertain readers of all ages, but I think younger MG readers will get the most enjoyment out of it. An entertaining book for fans of wacky and funny adventures (and penguins!) and the trouble-makers in all of us.

The Stars Fell Sideways

Alison Arroway takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’. She has to, or she won’t get paid. Alison is a stunt double for pampered teen actress Pomegranate and when the director takes the shoot to Portugal, Alison is anything but thrilled to be rooming with Pom. But getting to hang around teen hearthrob Erik? Now that’s a plus.Erik invites both girls on a sunset boat trip and Alison manages to have a decent time. Until the storm hits and the boat is shipwrecked on a small island, leaving Erik missing and the boat captain dead. In the morning light, Alison and Pom find themselves on the lost island of Atlantis. Only one problem: now that the girls know the secret of the island, the Atlanteans don’t want them to leave. They're stuck with corsets, full-skirted dresses, and the strange steam-driven contraptions that are just a way of life for the islanders. When a plot by the ruthless army Captain to take over the island and declare himself General over all emerges, an underground group promises to return the girls to the mainland if they can help stop him. They'll go through a mountain, literally, to find the Book of Blue, a book that will explain how to make ‘the stars fall sideways' in order to save the day and earn their freedom.

WS: What three words best describe THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS?
CM- Islands, Atlantis, & fun!

WS: In one sentence, can you give us your best pitch to convince readers that they MUST read your book?
CM- It's a fun and quick read that includes a steampunk twist on the Atlantis legend and hot boys!

WS: Where did the idea or story behind THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS come from? Why Atlantis?
CM- I have no idea where the idea come from! :(  I wrote a straight contemporary for NaNo and wanted something completely different and next thing I knew I was writing a fantastical steampunk-infused kick-ass teen stunt double story.

WS: Grab a copy of THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS and answer the following:
Favorite chapter?
CM- Seven!
Favorite page?
CM- 166
Favorite Character? What do you love about them?
CM- Pom. She was a lot of fun to write. While I love Alison and her take-no-prisoners adventurous personality, the totally clueless and mega-actress personality of Pom was a lot of fun to write.
Flip to a random page, choose one or two sentences and give us a little teaser please.
CM- "There was a roaring sound that started out small but quickly grew in intensity until we couldn’t hear anything. Erik pulled us up the small stairs to the deck and when we turned to lookat the captain, all that was there was broken wood. The entire top half of the boat was missing."

WS: Is there a sequel planned for THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS (I really hope there is!)? If so, can you share anything about what may happen next?
CM- Yep! There's a sequel planned! Alison and Corben will be reunited and more secrets about the island are revealed!

WS: Your character Alison gets stranded with Pomegranate, a very famous actress... what actress or actor would you love to get stranded with?
CM- Preferably one that is smart enough to keep us alive until help arrives... Benedict Cumberbatch is nice to look at and maybe his Sherlock smarts have rubbed off? Or there's also Nathan Fillion! For a bestie, it'd be fun to hang out with Emma Watson or Anne Hathaway for a while!

WS: In THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS, the lost island of Atlantis is divided into different small cities where the people perform certain jobs...which city would you live in and what job would you hold if you resided in Atlantis?
CM- I'd love the views of Aeddlist, being on top of the mountain, and I'd like to think I ran a bookshop or maybe a haberdashery!

WS: In THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS, Alison works as a teen stunt double (which is so cool!) and there are a lot of movie references throughout the book, so I gotta ask, what's YOUR favorite movie? And what's the last awesome movie you watched?
CM- I'm a movie junkie! I have lots of favorites but I think my top top three are The Family Stone, The Little Mermaid, and Jurassic Park! The last awesome movie I watched was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. It was panned by the critics, but I thought it was pretty neat!

WS: Fill in the blanks:
I'm really awesome at  crafting things, like making my own version of things I see that I like. I can crochet, paint, sew, and build but sadly I'm not a genius at any of them.

I'm embarrassed to admit that
I'm terribly afraid of the dark. Like I won't even walk 100 ft in the night to get the mail from the mailbox. I'll wait until morning.

My first literary crush (character or author) was Henry Tilney from Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, which is funny because my current WIP is a retelling of Northanger Abbey but in SPACE!

The last fantabulous book I read was  For Darkness Shows The Stars (which is also an Austen retelling!).

I'd love to write a book about  Something I can't experience myself, like Regency England or spaceships.

WS: If you were to create and bake a cupcake inspired by THE STARS FELL SIDEWAYS what would it look and taste like and what would you call it?
CM- I'd have blue-tinted cream cheese frosting over a half vanilla with sprinkles in, half carrot cake base. And maybe a sugar or dark choco shaped gear on top? What would I call it... Um, maybe a "Mollie Treat" because my pup would be staring at me wanting a bite!

Thank you so much Cassandra for answering my questions!

"Waiting On" Wednesday (55): Boy Nobody

"Waiting On" Wednesday...is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm excitedly waiting on...

Boy Nobody
Allen Zadoff
June 11, 2013
Little, Brown BFYR
They needed the perfect soldier: one who could function in every situation without fear, sympathy or anger; who could assassinate strangers and then walk away emotionally unscathed. So they made Boy Nobody-a teen with no name or history. The perfect soldier. Boy Nobody is the perennial new kid in school, the one few notice and nobody thinks much about. He shows up in a new high school, in a new town, under a new name, makes few friends and doesn't stay long. Just long enough for someone in his new friend's family to die -- of "natural causes." Mission accomplished, Boy Nobody disappears, and moves on to the next target. But when he's assigned to the mayor of New York City, things change. The daughter seems so much like him; the mayor smells like his father. And when memories and questions surface, the Program is watching. Because somewhere, deep inside Boy Nobody, is somebody: the kid he once was, the teen who wants normal things like a real home and parents, a young man who wants out. And who just might want those things badly enough to sabotage The Program's mission.

This one definitely has me intrigued and excited! I can't wait to meet Boy Nobody and figure him out.

What are you waiting on this week?!

MY TEASER
(a few more than two sentences today)

"A buzzing roar swung by overhead, drowning out Gapper, a wave of sound that rose quickly from silence to a painful howl and just as quickly back to silence. Cass looked up to the sky, her ears throbbing. Nothing. Then came a deep, slow thrumming drone that she could feel in her chest, and then she saw it coming over the tree line, covering up Mars, swallowing up the rest of the night sky. She forgot to breathe." (ARC, pg 27)

THREE WORDS: Fresh, Fun, Steampunkasy...(why yes, I did mix “steampunk” and “fantasy” to make up a new word!)

MY REVIEW: Cassandra Marshall's The Stars Fell Sideways took me on a fun, unexpected journey into the world of Atlantis. An Atlantean world that Marshall has infused with refreshing originality and totally made her own!

When teenager stunt gal extraordinaire Alison Arroway heads to Portugal to work on a movie as the stunt double for famous teen actress Pomegranate she's excited for the stunts, to maybe spend time with heart-throb Eric, and to see the sights. She's less thrilled about spending time with spoiled, nasty Pom. But when Eric invites Alison and Pom on a boat cruise and the boat wrecks during a storm and Eric goes missing, Alison and Pom end up stranded together on the infamous island of Atlantis. And once the girls are there, the Atlantean people won't let them leave. So the girls are stuck in an old-fashioned world, run by steam-driven machines, but a hostile takeover and rebellion army may be their ticket back home. If they can survive “the stars falling sideways” that is.

At a little over 200 pages, The Stars Fell Sideways is a quick, but super fun and cute read. Marshall has weaved an exciting steampunkish fantasy tale full of humor, action, and romance that will appeal to a wide audience.

The Atlantean world in The Stars Fell Sideways is an unexpected one, but in a totally good way. Marshall has crafted a refreshingly unique and captivating Atlantis that is more steampunk Victorian England than full on mythical fantasy, but completely charming. The world-building in The Stars Fell Sideways is excellent and the Atlantis Alison and Pom find themselves in has great historical, social, and cultural layers, combining together to create an endlessly fascinating and believable world, that is both delightful and dark. I love the mix of steampunk and fantasy and both elements are used in imaginative and dazzling ways.

The journey Alison embarks on in Atlantis is full of thrills, chills, action, twists, turns, and smooches. I had a lot of fun falling into this story, exploring the world of Atlantis with Alison and Pom as they are given jobs, make new friends, and set out to find the legendary Blue Book and learn how to make the stars fall sideways. The romantic elements are really cute and, at times, even unexpectedly and enticingly hot and steamy.

Alison is an awesome heroine; from her bad-ass stunt skills to her feisty take charge attitude and wit, she's very amusing and entertaining. I love how she uses movie references to describe her settings and feelings. Pomegranate is, at first, a stereotypically egotistical and mean girl, but she really grew on me with her outrageous observations and laugh-out-loud humor. These two girls make an odd, quirky pair, but their eventual friendship is sweet and cute.

The book ends on a satisfying note, but definitely left me wanting more and I really hope there's a sequel!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: The Stars Fell Sideways sparkles with fun originality. Marshall weaves an exciting tale with a fresh take on Atlantis and an awesome mix of steampunk and fantasy. I greatly enjoyed this book and think other YA fans will too. I definitely recommend it!
